Climate change, carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions and planning for possible environmental changes are just some of the topics that will be the focus of the Broward County Climate Change Task Force.
The first meeting of the 25-member task force will take place on Thursday, December 4, 1 - 4 p.m. at the Government Center West, 2nd Floor Hearing Room, One North University Drive, in Plantation.
"We want to develop an action plan that will chart Broward County's response to the environmental impact of climate change," said Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, who will Chair the Task Force. "We're drawing from the expertise of a wide variety of people in our community to determine what's expected, what can be mitigated and what we must plan for."
The Task Force includes representatives from: Broward County Government, at-large members appointed by the County Commission, Broward County School Board, Broward League of Cities, Water Advisory Board, Hospital Districts in Broward County, Broward Sheriff's Office, South Florida Water Management District, academic institutions, environmental organizations, Florida Power and Light, Florida Department of Transportation, South Florida Regional Planning Council, and business and economic interests in Broward County.
Various subcommittees will also be created to address scientific and technical issues; greenhouse gas reductions; natural systems; the built environment; economic, social and health issues; and intergovernmental affairs. Members of the public will have the opportunity to serve on these subcommittees and participate in the meetings.
The Climate Change Task Force was approved by the County Commission and is supported by County staff. The goals of the climate change program include:
- Development and implementation of projects and incentives for residents, businesses, and organizations to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gases (GHG)
- Development and implementation of adaptation strategies to alleviate the likely adverse consequences of climate change
- Provision of education and outreach to encourage Broward County residents, businesses and organizations to participate in the program
- Pursuit of federal and state grants, energy cost savings, and other financial resources to offset program costs
