Water conservation information, free trees and plants, and a day of fun brought a large crowd to Broward County's Seventh Annual Water Matters held on Saturday, March 14, at Tree Tops Park in Davie.
This year an estimated 3,200 Broward County residents, volunteers and students attended the annual event. The theme was "Learn to Conserve."
"This year's attendance confirms that people are increasingly looking for ways to conserve, save money and protect the environment," said Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, who is vice chair of Broward's Water Resources Task Force and chair of the Broward County Climate Change Task Force. "An historic drought, water restrictions, costly water bills and the need to tighten budgets have raised awareness about the need for water conservation."
Water Matters Day is the County's premier water conservation event that serves to inform residents about the regional water system, the need for water conservation, environmental stewardship, and how to conserve water and enhance water quality while creating attractive NatureScape landscapes that are beneficial for native wildlife.
All visitors had the opportunity to earn free native trees and plants. To qualify, participants had to visit at least 12 of the approximately 50 educational exhibits. Attendees also enjoyed rain barrel construction workshops and three lucky attendees won their own rain barrels to take home. Other prizes included a RainBird water efficient irrigation system valued at approximately $1,200 and dual flush toilet kits provided by Flush Choice. Kids enjoyed face painting, building crafts in a workshop sponsored by the Home Depot, and the musical offerings of local singer-songwriter Grant Livingston.
The Seventh Annual Water Matters Day event was hosted by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, South Florida Water Management District, and the School Board of Broward County. Partners and sponsors for this year's event included the Cities of Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, Cooper City, and Hollywood; the Towns of Davie and Southwest Ranches; the Central Broward Water Control District, the South Broward Drainage District, and the Old Plantation Water Control District; MWH Americas; Camp, Dresser, and McKee; RainBird; and the Home Depot.
