Broward County Commissioner Albert C. Jones today announced Torey L. Alston will serve as Chief of Staff for his office beginning March 1, 2010.

"Torey's experience as a state agency director for two programs along with his roots in Broward has prepared him well to lead our office," said County Commissioner Albert Jones. "Torey is a visionary leader and has fresh, innovative ideas and will serve the people of District 9 well."

Alston, 25, previously served as executive director for Florida's Office of Supplier Diversity (OSD) and interim executive director for the state's Council on Efficient Government. As executive director since 2007, Alston oversaw the state's supplier diversity program, which manages minority, women and service-disabled veteran business certification, outreach, compliance and matchmaking. As interim executive director for the Council on Efficient Government, Alston evaluated business cases for cost-effectiveness and efficiency before an agency proceeds with any outsourcing of projects.

Alston is a product of Broward County Public Schools having attended Walker Elementary, Parkway Middle and Blanche Ely High School. He served as the Student Member (Adviser) on the School Board of Broward County from 2001 to 2002. He received his undergraduate degree in business administration from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) and a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing and management.

"I am truly humbled by this new responsibility to serve District 9 and the people of Broward County. I look forward to working in the district to better the lives of those we serve," Alston said. "I will work with Commissioner Jones to support his focus on jobs, education, access to contracts and safe neighborhoods."
